Morocco

We flew to Morocco on January 17th, 2020.  It was Chris’ first African country, and the first time that Jill had been back to Africa in 25 years!

To say that we both LOVE Morocco is such a huge understatement.  We have been floored and amazed at the people, the landscape, the culture, the food and well…….pretty much everything about it!

I’d like to quote Mark Twain from his book, Innocents Abroad, to better explain my thoughts on Morocco.  He really nails it and I could never do a better job of describing such a fascinating place, than him.  This is his description of arriving in Tangier, after travelling in Spain.

“We wanted something thoroughly and uncompromisingly foreign—foreign from top to bottom—foreign from center to circumference—foreign inside and outside and all around—nothing anywhere about it to dilute its foreignness—nothing to remind us of any other people or any other land under the sun. And lo! In Tangier we have found it. Here is not the slightest thing that ever we have seen save in pictures—and we always mistrusted the pictures before. We cannot anymore. The pictures used to seem exaggerations—they seemed too weird and fanciful for reality. But behold, they were not wild enough—they were not fanciful enough—they have not told half the story. Tangier is a foreign land if ever there was one, and the true spirit of it can never be found in any book save The Arabian Nights.”

Yes, Morocco was a foreign land to us.  We spent the first week or so both jetlagged and absolutley astounded and overwhelmed by the amount of stimulus we recieved through every sense.  It is certainly unlike anything we have ever seen before, and it has completely grabbed a hold of us with it’s mystery and intrigue.

I have a feeling that Morocco will be a part of our story for many years to come.

First Impressions of Morocco

As we pulled our rental car to the side of the road, to look down at the stunning Rif Valley below, I couldn’t help but realize that I really had had no idea what Morocco had in store for us.

The Mighty Sahara

The Sahara Desert is one of those places that I have thought about for much of my life.  How do the desert dwellers live? What is it like out there?  How many stars can you see?  The list goes on!  I had answers to my questions and much more on our desert trip!

10 things we love about chefchaouen

I would love to list ALL the things that we love about Chefchaouen, but alas, there are just too many!

All in all, we spent 6 weeks living in Chefchaouen, so we do know a thing or two about it.  We defintely have many favourite things about the wonderful city, but we will only share our top 10.  Enjoy!

Oh!  And Please, Please, Please plan to stay in Chefchaouen for more than just one night!

Rissani, A Must Stop

On our second journey to Rissani we spent 5 weeks exploring the surrounding area.  We got to know our favourite souk much better, and we spent lots of time hanging out in the herbalists shop!  If you are headed to the desert, Rissani is a must stop!

Welcome to Oualidia

Oualidia is a beautiful and quiet seaside town  located a couple hours south of Casablanca.  It is famous for it’s oysters, and you will see many men selling them on the streets in this sweet little town.  We never did try the oysters, but we have been told that they are to die for.

This video is a look at our explorations of the water front area of Oualidia.
