bulgaria

In December of 2015 Chris and I embarked on our first overseas journey together.  We were headed to Greece, Bulgaria and Italy for 6 weeks of fun and exploration.

The whole trip came to be because of the fact that we really wanted to ski in Europe.  While staying at a hostel in Merida, Mexico early that year (after holidaying with Jill’s parents for 9 days) we met a young man who started telling us about skiing in Europe.  He mentioned that Bulgaria is a good place to ski, and is also very cheap.  It was one of those moments where we took note, then logged it in our memory banks for safe keeping.

Later that summer, we started talking about what it would be like to go skiing somewhere else in the world.  Of course, the Bulgaria idea popped up, and I immediately looked it up online to see what I could see.  I learned that the hills looked pretty awesome, and that the lift tickets were very cheap in comparison to Canada’s prices.

Thus began an idea, and a plan started to formulate.  The flight to Bulgaria from Canada was only $700 return as we were travelling outside of the high season.  So, we decided to fly into Bulgaria, and out of Bulgaria, but we would take the time to see some other places as well while we were half way around the world.

However, in retrospect, we wished we would have planned our whole 6 weeks just in Bulgaria as we had no idea how diverse a country it is.  The scenery was magnificent, the people were great, and it just had a very relaxed and chill atmosphere, just our speed.

In total we spent 2 weeks out of the 6 weeks in Bulgaria.  I managed to write a few blog posts while were there, so I have included links to them here.  We will definitely go back someday really soon!

Ponderings From Above Gabrovo

As we sit above Gabrovo, Bulgaria, on an incredible sunny day, I reflect on our past few days here in this special country. A land that, if it could speak, could tell of extreme hardships under communist rule, but also of happier days and a bright future…..

Gone Clubbin'

This post is about us, at the age of almost 40, going clubbing in Bulgaria.  It was this night that it suddenly doned on us that we aren’t spring chickens anymore, and the things we liked to do when we were young, aren’t the same either.

warmth along the black sea

Although the Black Sea is very cold this time of year (yes, us crazy Canadians dipped our feet in it), the warmth of the people along it, cannot be over stated…..

Just Some Skiing

“Holy smokes!”  I breathlessly announced as I slid to a stop on one of the slopes at Bansko.

I looked at Chris completely perplexed, and was very reassured to see that, indeed, he was as exhausted as I was.  We both stood there and huffed and puffed for a couple minutes, looking down the slope and taking in our surroundings.
